HP Laserjet - voltage problem?

This printer, which behaved perfectly well in England, has recently joined me in Cyprus, apparently undamaged, but is showing strange systems. I should say that I am running from generator power only, technically at 220v, but often shared with workers on the building site where I (so far) live. The printer works from a parallel port converted to USB ( as manufactured, and always used)
Occasionally, the printer works. More often, it tells me that there is either no power connection, or no USB connection. This message is impossible to banish, and overrides anything elsse on screen, including trying to cancel the offending print job.
It also frequently installs another copy of itself, without request .
HELP?
TIA
Kim
