HP Deskjet840c printer does not print yellow ink

My HP Deskjet 840c is only dispensing cyan and majenta ink (as well as black). A new colour cartridge has not helped and the problem occurs whether or not the printer is connected to the computer. The "self test" printout and the printout provided after the head cleaning program both show a complete absence of yellow.
HP want £94 to supply an exchange refurbished printer with a 3 month warranty which looks like a bad deal.
Can any one suggest how I can get the printer to resume dispensing yellow ink?

If the 840 is similar to the 690 then there should be a pad of raised dots that contack the ink cartridge. Ensure that these are clean and also that there is nothing obstucting the flow of ink between the print head and the paper, use a torch to inspect that area. It maybe something as simple as a tiny pice of paper or fluff obstructing the print head.
