How to Zip a file

I sent an email with an .exe extension attachment, but it was blocked by the recipients Outlook. So I put it in a folder, and compressed the contents. Still blocked!

I sent it to myself, it arrived as an .exe, not zipped.

A compressed folder is treated as a normal folder in Windows XP. What you need is a program such as WinZip, or create a blank file and give it a .zip ending. That way, Windows will treat it as a Zip folder rather than a NTFS compressed folder.

Hope this makes sense.

Outlook 6.0 has an option to block all insecure files (.EXE, .COM, .SCR, etc). Look in the options, under the Security tab to find the option.

Thanks all, downloaded Winzip and solved the problem. I'm sure I've used this program before, I recognize the logo. It says 'evaluation copy', does this mean it will expire?

IZarc is free click here and has a very similar interface to Winzip or Powerarchiver

If tight compression is a priority try 7-zip click here also free to get a worthwhile reduction in archive size for most file types.
