how to stop procceses at start up

i have a new p.c running vista basic and it takes an age to start up been told it may be due to running procceses
can you advise me which procceses to stop in start up

Now I don't know about Vista,But with XP you just clicked start,Run,Type in msconfig,Ok.start up.Then you would untick any programs that you did not want to start on start up.Then Apply.Ok

You may have your anti-virus running at start up which will slow your computer down,What Anti-Virus do you have,
