How to send email when file downloaded from site

I would very much like my website to send me an email whenever a download link is used. This way I would know whether or not files have been downloaded yet.

Usually I just leave them on the website for a week and then remove them (some people don't check their email in time to see that the file is on the website waiting for them to download it).

Does anyone know if this is possible?

Particularly for your site visitors....

I think that you could probably assign an action to the download link and generate a PHP email from it. A generic message in the form, without any required fields, so that you know when the download is done. You could even tweak the content of the email to match each download and have as many different PHP files as you have downloads at any one time.
