I have a couple of external hard drives as use as back up for my laptop, they are connected via a USB, however I have recently bought a new bigger drive and want to know a why to securely format them so that no data can be recovered. Preferably a free way of doing so, thanks in anticipation.

I would format them then use Ccleaner, and under tools use drive wiper to wipe the white space (all on a formatted drive). Up to you how many passes you use but the more passes the more time it will take.

And when you have done that, try and recover data using free 'Data recovery' programs to see if any data can be found.
