Hi all
Can anyone help please
When I try to log on to my user account in windows xp I get this message
"windows cannot load your profile because it may be corrupted contact your administrator"
and then directs me to this,
"windows cant find the local profile and is logging you on with a temperay profile, changes made to the profile will be lost when you log off.

Can I repair my original profile in any way to get back in and retrieve my docs and things
Many thanks LewGeo

All you need to do is create a new profile on
the machine. Go in logged in as another user with
administrative rights, and rename your user folder, it
will be in c:\documents and settings\"userid". You can
just put old at the end of it. Then go into the folder of
your username, and rename the ntuser.dat file to
ntuser.old . You can at this point create a new username,
and then copy the contents of your old user folder,
everything but the ntuser.old file over to the new user
id folder. I would suggest going to tools, folder
options, and showing hidden files when copying this.
This way you can keep the contents of your desktop,
cookies, favorites, and some of your application
settings. remember to copy everything but the
ntuser.old. or dat file over from the old folder, it will
move your my documents, and everything. You will lose
some of your settings, but it will stabilize the system.
If you want to use the same ID you will have to copy out
of that folder first, and then remove the user completely
then add it back in, and then copy the data back to the
