Is it possible to record music from the PC to disc as I can from my radio to tape?

If it's not copyrighted or encrypted & you are the owner of the music then yes.
Others you would be infringing copyright etc.

Look for a free programme called CD XP Pro.

Simple and efficient.

In my seventies and still teaching!

Does your laptop have a CD or DVD ReWriter fitted?

As far as I know, does this cover it
"Optical drive options"
DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive
DVD/CD-RW combo drive

Click the tab 'Burn' at the top of WMP. This should open a new right hand pane. Highlight and drag the tracks you want on the CD into this pane from the playlist to create a burn list.
When you have all the tracks you want in the burn list, remembering that you can only get 70 minutes of audio on CD, press 'Start Burn' at the bottom of the pane.
