Does it really matter if you are running the appropriate Firewall and AV?

I certainly never considered it.
The reason I ask is that so much of this stuff - you know -the sort of thing
'Don't open this 'A postcard from a friend'
- send this message to your address book- then if you are a 'friend' you get the warning and pages of addresses.
Some folk- simply send it on without a critical checkup [Google]

Not a hoax, more of an urban myth. It is based on the presumption that malware will start with the first (or last) entry in your address book, attempt to send a copy of itself to that address then fall over because the address is invalid. Unfortunately malware is a lot more sophisticated than that.
