I would like to network 2 PC's to share internet/swap files etc.........

What is the easiest/cheapest way to do it and what connections would I need?

Both PC's Windows XP Home.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

A simple crossover cable and run the network wizard.

Does the crossover cable need to be connected to Ethernet connections........excuse my ignorance.

Yes - it has the same connection on both ends and plugs into the network card on both pcs.

I think one PC has an Ethernet connection already installed but the other does not so looks like I will require the crossover cable and 1 card....simple as that?

Yes simple as that PCI network card in the machine without onboard lan and crossover cable and run the network wizard in control panel.
