how much ram can windows xp home use, same question for 2000 pro?? i open and use a lot of programs that eat ram ,but only want to upgrade to what the programs are able to use,

Suggest a minimum of 128MB, 256MB better, 512MB should be ample. General opinion seems to be that 256MB is the minimum for XP.

I believe you can install 3GB into XP. I can't see why you could want all that though.

I read on the Crucial site once that you can have too much RAM and instead of speeding you machine, it slows it down. click here and fill in their questionaire and it will tell you the optimum RAM for your system.
