I took the calculator to be a rough and ready device to ensure that you had enough power available from your PSU for the hardware in a machine. Am I wrong thinking this?

A rough guide thats out by 66 watts.

250 PSU.

I put all my hardware in and it said i needed 316 watts.

yeah,i do agree.it recommends a 315w supply for me to.i have a 350w psu but ran all my current hardware from a 250w for ages no problems.just though it my help sombody out a bit.
