Hi all,

I am formatting a friends hard drive, after a lot of Problems...i.e setup files corrupted and WPF(Windows protection files etc...)
Now it has taken 15mins to do 10%...I think this is not right and possibly a hard drive error..What do you all think. The Hdd LED is just stuck.
Sys:
P4 1.7ghz
256MB DDR RAM
40GB Hdd Maxtor 5400rpm
MSI Mobo

Any thought...onboard sound and VGA.

Assuming you're working on a pre-XP system and that you're formatting from a boot floppy, have f-disked prior to formatting?

I'm a bit vague on W9X systems now but I recall having all sorts of difficulties formatting, all cured by doing an f-disk first.

Well I have Fdisk, and still it got to 10% and has taken ages. So I thought I'd try XP and it is still the same.

If this helps.. I just installed a new 2nd 40gig HDD and the total time spent with software was 1hr 2omin and that was slow me being a first time upgrader.

It just seems weird as I have built many PC's and this is the longest that a 40GB hdd has tken, wondered whether anyone had come accros a maxtor fault etc.

Thanks all.

There was another occasion where f-disk took on an alternative meaning and I had to buy a new one.

15 mins to get to 15% is very very slow! took me about 4 to 5 mins for the entire drive on a similar setup.

If you use Partition Magic or Acronis on a floppy disc it will be done in no time

AMD 4 ever

You could try format c:\q

This should format the drive in about 40 seconds.

That is if it is supported on the start up floppy.

Sorry that should read a:\ format c:/q

Apologies
