How hot should HDD get?

Hi this is a follow on from my other thread about not being able to see a drive. I have now closed that thread as I was not clear what I meant, my fault.
Trying to install another HDD in a caddy or direct connection to IDE cable, sometimes it can be seen sometimes not, what concerns me is the temperature of it. When I pull out the caddy and remove the drive for whatever reason it is hot, I dont know the actual temp but a few more degrees and I would put it down very fast or drop it, it is just about holdable.
Other drives in the same machine are cool or slightly warm. There seems to be something wrong in my opinion.

what say you guys

the hdd should be about the same temp as the other hhd or cooler caddy should have a fan

caddy has a fan, will try in a spare one.
