Hi, okay - after receiving answers to my previous posts I now have my new pc and a new OEM windows XP Home SP3. What I need to know now.....is this something I can install myself. Is it just a case of inserting the disk and following the prompts? Are the prompts dumbed down so the average joe with home skills can follow them? Or do I need someone with skills in this area? Thanks again guys.

"Is it just a case of inserting the disk and following the prompts? "

Just about.

"Are the prompts dumbed down so the average joe with home skills can follow them? "

They are fairly straight forward.

Here is a guide of what to do:-

If this is not already too late....

The prompts are fairly clear should follow intuitively

BUT

If you will be the exclusive user,.... you can save yourself time and fiddling about later by not setting any passwords, you are the Administrator.

When offered, leave blank and just press enter

Have you also got the Motherboard Drivers? you need to install them after you have installed XP
and if it is a SATA HDD you may need to have that driver on a flash drive or floppy as part of the XP install.
