how to get microphone to work

i have just purchased new labtec speakers and a headset. the speakers have jacks for the headfphones and microphone
the headphones r working fine but i cant get the mic to work
when i run the speech wizard it is not picking up sound what am i doing wrong

Try looking under the sound and audio devices, in the control panel, and you may find that the microphone is muted.
Is everything plugged into the PC correctly, as most have seperate sockets for output/speakers and input/microphone.

i have my speakers plugged into the green and pink sockets how do i check if my mic is muted
in the volume box there is a tick in the mic box

Double click on your Volume icon in the Task Bar.

You may also have inadvertently disabled sound in a program such as WMP9 or have the mixer sliders at the bottom rather than the top.

everytime i untick the mute button it reticks itself it is not muted in wmp9
