Is this possible without Windows being installed. The reason I ask is that after lots of trouble I installed ubuntu. I know wish to reinstall windows but it will not let me as the disc is not ntfs.

If you are going to install Windows from a boot-able CD you should get the option to format the hard drive during the install process.

Seagate DiscWizard

TinyURL Link

"DiscWizard works with Maxtor and Seagate disc drives. The software lets you quickly install your new disc drive with wizards that guide you through the processes of creating and formatting partitions on your disc drive, transfering data, and backing up your data."

I have heard that it works with other makes of drive, I don't know for sure.

When I get to the option to format it is greyed out. When I try to install win7 it says I cant because the drive is not ntfs. Is there a way of reformatting it in ntfs.

You must boot from a CD. Otherwise it will be in use.

In any event, all partition apps can have their quirks too for unobvious reasons.

You can also try:

Partition Wizard Bootable CD

or

gparted live cd
