How does it do it???

I have just read a thread about HD temperatures and one of the replies suggested that there isn't a temp sensor on a HD.

I have three ATA HDs attached to an ECS L4S8A2 MOBO and I have Everest Diagnostics installed. This indicates the temperature of all the HDs individually between about 29C and 35C when 'ticking over'.

Everest reads the built in temperature diode within the hard drive I think.

Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) permits monyitoring of hard drive temperatures. I believe it's only for SATA HDDs, but please correct me if I am wrong.

Smart is also on IDE drives as well as sata. Good thing to hve smart monitoring switched on in the BIOS as it will alert you to accumulating error on your drive, giving you a chance to back up / rpair before it fails.
