How do you make a border with curved corners?

Any suggestions for the best and most elegant way to make bordered boxes with curved or cut-off corners?

I can think of several methods for doing this but I'm not sure they're the most economical or widely browser friendly. One could, for example, create the curved corners as image (gif or jpg) files to be inserted into the corner cells of a 3x3=9 cell table. The remaining straight borders could be done using css style sheets. The advantage of this is that the table can change size yet keep its curved corner appearance.

Or is there some other standard method for doing this?

Create several 1x1 table cells with colour in?

is the standard one. It's simply a question of working with table cells and circles in a graphics program to create what you want. You use the centre cell of the table for your content.
