It surprises me that when u input a search phrase into google it comes up with the list of 'founds' so quick: how can it search the internet so quick. Are there search engines that are geared towards particular subject?

Search engine pre-search and build a catalogue of pages. Hence when you search it searches the catalogue not the actual web.

Also means Search engines can harbour old web info (non-existent pages) and can even be slightly out of date.

Google works by spidering all the pages it can find on the net and then they are ranked by how many links a site has pointing to it.
