"but the recovery disc will not work,"...elaborate on that one. Are you booting from the disk? are you receiving error messages? is the machine set to boot from CD-ROM?

I restart the computer with the recovery disc in and it sould go to the four options, like it has done previouly.
but all it does now is go straight to windows .

Go to your BIOS and make sure that it is set to boot from CD. Whilst its booting up you should see hit (whatever) to enter setup. Hit the key...it tends to be Del or F1 or Ctrl.

Once there use the arrow keys to navigate to boot options and check that CD-ROM is first.

It sounds like you need to change the boot sequence so that the 1st boot is from the the CD-ROM.

This change is usually done from the bios.

Did you see "boot options"?

YES

Have to pop out so >>>

Have a gander about for the "Advanced" BIOS
Features and then press ENTER. Look down the advanced
bios features list until you come across an entry for
First Boot Device. This should be CD-ROM. If it isn't
then use the UP/DOWN arrow keys until it is.

First boot device = CD-ROM

Second boot device = Floppy

Third boot device = HDD-(0)

After you have set these then press the *esc* button to
return to the main menu.

Next scroll down to 'Exit & Save
Setup'. You will be asked if you want to save the changes
to the CMOS. Answer yes to this, your pc will then
reboot. If a "BOOTABLE" CD is in the CD-ROM a message will appear at
the bottom of the screen for you to press a key to boot
from the CD. If no CD is in the CD-ROM your BIOS will
next check your floppy and finally, if no disk is in your
floppy, your pc will boot from your hard drive.

You can change the boot sequence to whatever you wish but the CDROM will have to be first if you want to boot from a recovery/reload disk.
