How do I update windows XP

  Boy Zone 23 Sep 12

Just rebuilt my laptop which runs win XP, recovery disk ran OK from Acer, but when I try to update windows keep getting error code 0X8024400A. Looked on MS web site to find fix, but not able to find a true fix. Fault is unable to update windows...

Hope someone can help.

Check which SP level of XP you have loaded. (Start, Control Panel, System). This will tell you if you have Service Pack 1, 2 or 3 installed. It could be that, if you have an early SP and haven't updated to the latest SP level, then Windows Update won't be able to work. There are plenty of places from which you can download SP2 and SP3 (as necessary).

Download Windows XP Service Pack 3 - ISO-9660 CD Image File from and burn it to CD. When you insert CD you have burnt, it autoruns to begin the install SP3, just follow the instructions on screen. It is the stand-alone version and is for any XP (home or pro) very useful to have.

When you do what lotvic suggests, remember it has to be burnt as an ISO, so use a freebie like Imgburn from here, for example
