How do I stop programs from autostarting?

Dear Anyone.

When I turn my machine on, a whole bunch of programs (MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Paltalk etc.) start up whether I want to go on the Net or not.

This is annoying. I've found them all listed in C\Documents and Settings\Chris Burke\Start Menu, but if I try and delete one from the start menu it asks me if I want to put all the folders and files into the bin. I don't. I just don't want them starting up until I click on their icons, not automatically!

How do I do this?

Yours in puzzlement

Chris.

you can typre into run
msconfig and under start up deselect the programs
it will ask for restart,on restart a configuration box will appear put a tick in bottom right box and ok
or i find this easier to use

You mite wanna look in ur "start up" folder in the Windows directory, any exececutable file placed in there will auto run at startup.

I didn't know about MSConfig before - I'll remember it forever now. Would you believe I'd phoned up a local engineer who wanted to charge me 30 pounds - that's 60 bucks!! - to come and do that for me!

Lucky I said 'No', wasn't it.

Yours with respect and thanks

Chris.
