If you remove the Win98 Partition XP will not boot untill you do a Repair with the CD in the Drive. see hear for repair click here

You could delete Win 98 from the other partition, but as far as I know you cannot delete the actual partition using windows alone. You could reformat create one large drive and reinstall from scratch.

I stand corrected. Again.

XP was not installed over 98 it was installed as a fresh OS on a new partition, so the 98 partition is redundant. If I stick the xp cd in and boot from that if I select "repair" can I delete the partition 98 is on ?

XP still writes files to the Win98 drive

So the only way of removing this 98 partition is to reinstall XP from scratch and lose all my programs and settings ? Or can I delete the 98 partition using the XP repair menu, and then repair the XP partition that was left behind ?
