How do I re-install Windows 98?

Loading silly game from cereal packet CD has corrupted my Windows 98 SE so badly it won't load even in Safe Mode. Just freezes at start-up with wallpaper showing but no icons. How do I re-load Windows 98 from the CD? Will doing this over-write just old Windows systems files and leave other files intact? Or must I re-format drive and lose everything not backed-up?

You may need to go into the BIOS and change the Boot Order so that CDROM is first in the list.

Then put your Windows disk in the drive and reboot. This should install Windows over itself without touching any other files.

Get a startup disk from, start your pc from that selecting WITH CD support and run D:\setup on your Windows CD (assuming D is your CD drive)

If you have the windows 98 start up disc, place it in the drive wait for it to load up. If it doesn't, if you have it, select 'up-date windows'. then simply follow the instructions.
