How do I make a simple link or network?

  Quilljar 09:26 14 Nov 04

I have a main desk PC and a newish Dell laptop. Both are running WinXP Home. I have an ethernet equipped motherboard in the main PC and a connection in the laptop. I have followed the networking wizard dozens of times. I get the little winking icon on both toolbars and a sign saying that the LAN is connected. However, that is IT. I can find no files or any contact at all between the two computers. Can anyone help? I am on BT broadband with one of those green stingray Alcatel modems.

Do you have any firewalls on either machine set up? Either the windows firewall or a thirdparty one?

Yes I have the latest windows firewall and zone alarm plus AVG Pro! However, I thought I had excluded them. Maybe I had not properly. Another thought, should I use a crossover link cable? I believe my supplier gave me just a standard ethernet link.

Have you set up the drives or files for "sharing"?

Yes, I think that you need a crossover cable. I am not sure though of how it all works...
