If you're using MS Word, there are keyboard shortcuts to the German umlaut, French accents, and so on.

For an umlaut, try this:

Hold down simultaneously CTRL+SHIFT then (while holding those keys down) type a colon (nothing will happen).

Now type an a or u or o. This will give you ä or ü or ö.

Note that these shortcuts don't work in HTML - I did them above by copying and pasting from Word.

If you want French accents, here are a few common shortcuts:

CTRL+` then type the letter: gives a grave accent

CTRL+' then type the letter: gives an acute accent

CTRL+, then type the c: gives a cedilla

CTRL+SHIFT+^ then type the letter: gives a circumflex

I'm typing straight into a text box on Google Translate.
