My wife has purchased some fitness equipment which came with a DVD I tried to play it using my external DVD Writer /Player connected to her laptop but got the following message.Windows Media Player Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer. When I play it on my desktop using my internal DVD player it is ok but not when I try to play it on my wifes laptop. Can someone explain

Download and install the Latest Codecs for the laptop, dependent on her OS XP/Win7 etc.

Just Google - Latest Codecs Win XP, or whatever OS is on the laptop.

You could try extra codecs

Or use VLC instead of WMP.
