is there any way to force a modem to disconnect quickly under WinXp, I sometimes get a connection that stops passing data and I need to redial to bring it back to life but the modem refuses to disconect and if I pull the phone plug I have to wait for it to time out

right click on the two monitor icon in the taskbar and choose disconnect.

if that doesnt work then try ctrl+alt+del and see if you can stop the modem there.

good luck

Haysi

try my computer/dialup networking, see if you can disconnect through there by double clicking or right clicking the connection.

failing that, keep unplugging.

sorry i cant help more.

good luck

have you tried sending and receiving email when the connection hangs to kick start it.

what ISP are you using?

can't disconnect through my computer/dialup networking either.
I use zonealarm and try a send/rec on email to see if there is any trafic on the zonealarm indicator.
it only happens through tiscali, I also use hemscott.net and never have this trouble with them, but getting connected through them isn't easy.

RNAAPP is the program running in 98 and may well be in XP but I can't check. Closng that disconnects the modem in 98 at least.

'How do I force a modem to disconnect'
have you tried turning zone alarm off this is the main cause of many problems especially in win xp

Pull the cable out the back of comp

just checked and there does not seem to be anything like RNAPP running in win xp and exiting zonealarm does not make any difference.
Which cable do you mean ? pulling the power cable would work but as I said originally, the modem still takes several mins to hang up after the phone plug is pulled.
