How do I create a forum?

Is there special software needed to create a forum?
I want one where anyone can read but only registered members can update so I need a registration process with the usual email containing a random password that the user needs to enter 1st time & then change as required.
I would be the moderator and would need to be able to delete invalid entries.
Pretty much like this forum I suppose.

There is,

You can use a dedicated forum package - I use phpBB for my forums which is a free software package but there are commercial ones out there too like vBulletin.

You can also use a free forum service but they tend to be advert heavy and I don't like them personally.

The only caveat is that you need access to a database in order to run a forum and that means a paid webhost.

If you have any other question feel free to ask - I run 7 websites with forums all using phpBB.

Hiya again,

If you want to see how configurable a forum software package is then look at these websites of mine - all use phpBB:-

The last one shows phpBB in it's unmodified state when first installed.

If you create the site using a Content Management System (CMS) such as Drupal or Joomla, these provide the tools you need to create a forum.
