How do I copy CD tracks to MP3 (hard drive)

I want to make some music compilations.

How do I copy a track from a CD and save it as an MP3 file on the hard drive?

Do I need some software? If so, please can you recommend a free download and where to get it?

When you place a CD into drive and run Windows Media Player, click on COPY FROM CD, choose in preferences to save as MP3. Click COPY and the CD will be copied to PC as MP3.

You could also do this in Apple iTunes for Windows. The benefits of this is 192kbps MP3 audio compared to 56kbps in WMP.
