If I want to connect to the net when I am visiting somewhere with no landline connection available, how do I connect to the net?

Are you talking about connecting from some remote part of the world where there is no telephone system?

Or from a field in the UK, where there is no landline immediately to hand?

Do you need just email access, or full web browsing and downloading?

What device will you be using - laptop, handheld, mobile phone?

What equipment do you already have?

Is cost an issue - if so, what is your maximum budget?

Others will advise better on the technical connections, but having tried using the laptop connected to the cellphone, the results are frustrating in the extreme. Tranfer rate is around 9.6kb. That's about five times slower than conventional landline.
RF interference from the phone can also lock up the laptop if you place them too near together.

with a mobile phone built in. I have used one and the speed is slightly higher than a landline.
