most keyboards support midi and there are different options with this on keyboards. There is midi in, midi out, and also there can be midi thru.
Midi-in...lets a pc play back through the KB.
Midi-out..lets a KB play into the pc to record.
Midi-thru.daisy chains more keyboards/drum maching etc.
You will just need a midi adaptor which goes from the KB to the joystick port on the pc. There is a lot of software (even freeware) to do complicated midi tasks.
The more midi channels the keyboard has the better, this is how many seperate instruments the keyboard can hear from the computer. Also , I think its called polyphonics, how many notes an instrument can play at once for chords etc.

A keyboard with a USB interface is probably safest and easiset to connect and get working. You will usually find they come with software to get you going. After that the best judge of what is the best software is will be your offspring - he/she'll know just what they want.

One accessory you might want to consider is a folding stand.

Try to get one that has a usb connection (assuming your son's computer does), much simpler than using a midi connection.

Limiting the number of octaves that your choice of keyboard has will save pounds and space/clutter.

Best makes possibly Novation or Midiman, not sure on current models.

Try Komplett (pc specialists) or Turnkey or Digital Village (both music specialists). The digital village online site will give a good description of various keyboard specs.
