How to determine correct colour on laptop 8.1 screen

The amount of light on my laptop screen images vary according to how I tilt the screen. I don't know how to determine which colours are the true colours. Recently I had a photo book printed of a recent trip. When I received the book it was a disappointment because all of the photos were several shades darker than what I saw on my laptop screen. How do I determine that what I see on the screen is the colour that will be printed in a photo book?

First thing you need to do is calibrate your monitor, otherwise what you see is not what the printer see's. I use a 'Spyder to calibrate my monitor, but there are other ways you can do this for free Monitor calibration
