AVG has cleaned up my disk except for a file called FVProtect which it suggested that I banish to the virus vault. it would not go, and I have not been able to delete it, any suggestions.

os?
if xp or me did you disable system restore first while cleansing as it hides in there and may be the reason you cant remove it?
