How Dangerous is Java and Java Script

In this months PCA there is an article on Add ons an plugins for Firefox & IE. There is one plugin for Firefox called No Script. As I am not to well versed on the ins and outs of Java and Java Script, can anyone explain what is so "bad" about the two that you would have the need for a plugin for Java?

Also There was another plugin for Firefox called Adblock, which I am well familiar with. The other question I have is with these two plugins working together how and why do they make Firefox a safer browser. One more thing, with all the extensions that you can aquire with firefox, would it not slow the load up time for the browser, and also slow your surfing down? J.B.
