how to connect 2 pcs

hi all
i have a win 98 desktop comp with ethernet card and a xp home desktop comp also with a ethernet card i would like to connect the w98 to the xp to transfer files i have a crossover cable apart from plugging the cable in what next?? I also have a laptop with xp home and would also like to connect this to the xp home desktop after,will this be the same way perhaps some body knows of any good web sites that could explain in easy to understand steps

Plug in the cable to the 2 PCs and run the network connection wizard,

Start -settings- network connections, just follow the prompts.

is this done from just the xp machin or both comps

If you run it from the XP one it'll give you the opportunity to create a settings diskette, do this then run it to load the settings on the 98 machine.
