How to Change Drive Letters on XP Home

  Malverns 12:13 20 Mar 04

I have Windows XP Home on a PC customer built for me. The DVD-ROM drive was assigned letter "R" for some reason. I have since installed another DVD drive with write capabilities. This became drive letter F since I have two hard-dics, one split into two logical drives C and D. The other is E of course. Is it possible to re-assign the R drive letter to G say, or do I need special software ?

Use the computer management console to change the drive letter.

There's a Microsoft article on the subject at this link:

Basically you open up your Control Panel, double click on Administrative Tools then double click on Computer Management.

In the left hand panel of the Computer Management console, click once on Disk Management under the sub-heading of Storage.

You'll see your drives listed in the right hand panel.

Right click on the drive and choose the "Change drive letter and paths" option. You can alter the drive letter in there.
