I am using Windows XP and have 15 icons in the task bar. Is it possible to remove these without removing the programs they point to ?
I don't mean just to exit the program but to stop them apearing in the task bar.

right click the taskbar and choose properties tick 'hide inactive icons' and then click customize, the right hand column gives you the option to hide or show the taskbar icons

Run MSConfig and decide what you need to start up automatically. Generally just your AV program and maybe firewall if you are doing a lot.

Have a look at click here for more info about services to be allowed to start with Windows.
