How Can I Check for Missing Files?

On startup (W98SE) I get a brief glimpse of a warning about missing files - too short to note down.

How can I access this information so that I can act on it??

Take it you can get to your windows desktop?

Do a SFC (systems file checker) from the "run" command in case your win os files are missing or corrupt.Have your win cd ready in case it's required.

It may be Software you removed and it's left a reference. In which case you have to remove it from Registry or Win.INI or Sys.INI. You may be able to do this with a program like Regcleaner

Thank you Jim - I didn't know about SFC.
However, after successfully reinstating two files using this method, after rebooting I wasn't able to login for networking or use my desktop shortcuts.

I've had to revert the drive using GoBack to as it was before using SFC.

Now I'm confused....!

Strange as SFC will only check and replace ms windows files. Would not expect your results.

"login for networking problem after may! be exlplained? the loss of use to your desktop shortcuts unless your using a tweak software not sure off."

Are you able to press the "pause key" to show and record "warning about missing files etc.

"May have to do it a few times to catch it right.

woodchip is a specialist with win 98 and i would also recommend a regcleaner or simlar to try to clear any left over references form installed software.

Try to identify the message and pop back.

Ok Jim - I've had another go with the SFC and this time all is well. Following Woodchips suggestion I've also run RegCleaner satisfactorily so all appears well again...touch wood.

Thank you both for your help....now I'm back to my oringinal problem which was twaindrivers and aspi layers!

I may be back....!
