Hotmail posting out spam by itself.

I have today received two identical emails from a friend's hotmail account telling me he's bought a cheap iphone(which he hasn't)with a link to a website.

They're both signed off with his name and he didn't send them.

I've suggested he runs A squared and malwarebytes.

Is there something specific he should be looking for? I've not come across this before, but clearly something is mailing out using his hotmail account and contact list.

I suppose he should change his password?

Any thoughts gratefully received.

has now deleted all of his contacts too. Can they be recovered?

What I did was changed password created another Hotmail account deleted my contact list in th old one and put it in the new one .Informed those that needed to know of the new address and just got that one to redirect to the old one .So I still just use the old one.No probs since
