Hosts File

I run a Vista set-up and have been advised that the Hosts File should be made read only. Can anyone advise on this.

What is the default?
What are the consequences of changing the state?

Making it "read only" could prevent any malicious software (viruses etc) from modifying its contents.

Some viruses have been known to amend the Hosts file so as to block access to sites that provide AntiVirus solutions.

That is what I have heard. What is the default? I assume not read only. Thank you for you reply.

locate your HOSTS file in C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc –> right-click on it –> and mark it “read-only”

Thank you both but why does windows leave it open?
