home networking

I had some excellent advice from 'Lozzie' and The PC Doctor about how to set up a two PC network. I opted for what seemed the cheapest method and installed a second ethernet card in the host pc, running XP Home. I connected with a crossover cable to the second, running Win 98 SE,and switched on. Xp recognised the second card and installed it with no trouble. The wizard gets as far as a screen showing one pc scooting to the other, but then shows a box with the message 'spooler sub system app has a problem and needs to close, SORRY!. That seems to be that, any suggestions please?
