In Vista I click on Network, two icons appear the Laptop and the Desktop, click on the Laptop icon two folders appear Public and Users
click on them to show contents, Click on the Desktop icon and I get an error: Windows cannot access \\"Name of desktop".
Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with the network.
To try to identify and resolve the network problem, click Diagnose.
Clicked Diagnose,
Windows did not fine any problems with this computers network.

Media sharing should be on and with the password off there should be no problem

If you want to share file on that XP PC, you need to enable simple file sharing click here or share file with user/group permission click here on that PC. Hope this helps.

Go to google.com, then type "Error code: 0x80070005", should be able to give you more ideas.

Make sure the XP folder is shared. Also check your security software on both is allowing local networking.

I have installed Win 7 and the above adaptor does not work - it did on Vista.

Help and/or advice appreciated.

Did you set the network up with the XP desktop click here or the Vista laptop? I did it with my XP desktop and it worked apart from the dektop not showing in the proper location in the network diagram on the Vista laptop. I had to install a Microsoft hotfix to get it to show up, but it still allowed me access to shared files on the desktop before then.
