Home DVD Recorders with Hard Drives

  Mysticnas 10:18 22 Dec 05

Hi all,

I'm just trying to find a website which explains the ins and outs of home DVD recorders to use with you TV.

How they work, formats, features etc...

can you record a one channel and watch another?

what's the benefit of a hard drive?

something that answers these type of questions.

Thanks all.

Several different types

1. single analogue channel (BBC1 to Channel 5) - record on DVD or hard drive drive watch another channel on the TV tuner just like the old videos. can usually record from HDD to DVD later if required.

2. twin analogue - watch one channel and use live pause playback (hdd), record another channel with DVD

3. single freeview (digital channels)- as 1 above but can only watch analogue channels on tv without another freeview box

4. twin freeview tuner HDD and DVD (tese are hard to find and expensive) - as 2 but with all the freeview channels

The major benefit of the HDD is that you dont waste DVD's by constantly having to burn your recordings. The ebst example of where this might be used is if you record an entire series onto your HDD, then you can burn them all on to 1 DVD. Likewise, you could record a footy match and if it turns out to be a classic you can burn it, otherwise you can simply delete it and you have not wasted your DVD's.

You can get rewriteable DVDs.....

Yes, I am aware of that. But why would you want to waste time writing material you are unsure you want to keep, whilst all the while unecessarily using your DVD burner when it can be recorded to HDD.

A Straightforward DVD Burner without HDD is for those who want simple burning, rather than a slightly more in control approach which you would achieve with the HDD.
