Hijacked homepage. ABOUT:BLANK

  joethebow 19:59 17 Mar 04

My homepage, which is usually set to Google, has been hijacked by a porn directory. The page calls itself ABOUT:BLANK.

Now normally when something hijacks my homepage I just reset it to Google and all is well. However this time's different.

Reset the webpage to Google. Everything appears OK. But shut down IE6, restart and guess what? The porno directory is back.

I've been through the Startup menu and nothing strange is running there. I can't find a file called ABOUT:BLANK.

One other little annoyance. Every time I open IE6 A dialler tries to come down and I have the devil of a job trying to stop it.

Any ideas what I can do.

"ABOUT:BLANK" is what Internet Explorer opens with if you want a "blank" page rather than a website when the application is launched. I always have my browser set to open this way.

It is configured in "Tools > Internet options" and the Home Page section of the General tab. If you click the "Use Blank" button, the browser displays "ABOUT:BLANK" in the address and shows only a blank page.

This should help if you still cannot retain Google (or anything of your choice) as your homepage - http: //support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;320159 (copy & paste in your browser & remove the space after http:)

MGMCC is correct - using "about:blank" speeds things up.

No I'd actualy like a blank home page but the porn directory is actually called ABOUT:BLANK

I can delete it, replace it, rename it, but next time I start a browser the porno directory named ABOUT:BLANK is back

just follow the above advice - adaware, spybot, spywareblaster and startpage guard will solve your problem

  GaT7 21:25 17 Mar 04

As velodrome says, you must try Spybot, Adaware. Also check out the Microsoft link I provided earlier.

For SpywareBlaster - click here - this prevents the scum to be installed in the first place.

If still no joy post back - you may have to manually delete the scum in the Registry.
