I have just brought a new hdd as my old one is starting to sound very dodgy

my ? is can i format the new hdd form a win xp install disk

if not how to format new hdd with no floppy drive on pc

Yes, if you boot from the XP install disk, the installation process will do it all for you.

You have backed up all of your data which is on the System drive(C:)? (Photos, music, docs etc.)

You do have the PC's drivers CD somewhere?

You are prepared to install all the applications and personal tweaks from scratch?

You may have to phone Microsoft to activate XP again.

Using Acronis to make a clone and then restore the clone to your new HD, is a much faster and more elegant way, but the method is another story and not what you asked.

Install the new HDD. Remembering to set it as 'Master'. Put the WinXP disk in the DVD/CD drive and boot. Follow on screen instructions.

Make sure that the new disc is registered and has a letter.

  FungusBoggieman 15:46 15 Mar 09

it is showing in disc managment
its asking to creat a new partition

it says new partition in mb 305243

the new hdd is 320gb is the partition size correct fot the gb amount

A few Mb are reserved for operating system use.

Accept the default and follow the prompts, unless you want to have more than one partition.

I that case you have to type in the size of the first and so on to the last when you accept the available space.

Is it an IDE or a SATA drive? How old is your XP install cd? Earlier versions of Win XP need motherboard drivers installed so that they can 'see' SATA hard drives. If its an IDE drive please ignore these comments.
