Help setting up wireless network

could anyone help or suggest an idiot's guide to setting up a wireless network.

I have a BT modem/router. The main computer is a pc running xp. The second is a laptop running vista. Both are connected to the internet wirelessly via the bt modem.
I have tried various ways of setting up a network following this advice click here and by using the network wizard on the xp pc.
The first kind of worked and the second worked halfway but when I opened the network file to transfer the settings to the vista laptop, it dint like it and wouldnt finish the set up.
I can 'see' each computer from the other, but from the xp it is a long winded route to find it - it doesnt appear under networks and i have to drill down to workgroups to find it. Then it wont let me access the laptop. (this might be the firewall on the laptop? )
From the laptop i can again 'see' the pc, but it isnt showing in the network, but outside of it.
I hope that this long winded makes sense! I have totally confused myself.
Any suggestions for getting a nice, neat network please.
