i am about to reinstall win98 on my pc but i do not want to lose my programs and files. will the reinstallation wipe my files and programs, do i need to back everything up or can i just do it.
I have been told that reinstallation automatically preserves files and programs but i needed to be absolutely sure, so can anyone help?

You should always have a backup in case something goes wrong.

But everyday people install Win98 over a current version of Win98 and it all goes ok.

And it does not always solve problems.

Best advice is to save all your data, downloads, emails etc and start from scratch.

It's always advisable to do a back of all your data files and essential programs before doing an upgrade or re-installation, even more so if these files and programs are on the same partition or the same hard drive.

I re-installed win98 yesterday with Norton Ghost2002 on the c drive partition one. All my data files are on partition 2 on the same drive. But I did a backup before the re-install, although I found out that the data files were not impacted by the re-install.

I suggest you do a back up before re-instal win98.
