Help please trying to copy MDV tapes onto DVD

We're trying to copy from our digital camcorder onto a DVD for the first time. We have Windows XP with Sonic software. We can only find a USB cable to connect the camcorder to the PC, which we used, but this means we can only play the recording but not capture to dvd or harddrive.

I've looked around on other topics and think where our problem lies is that we're missing an 'ilink' cable ????

Can anyone please confirm that's likely to solve our problem ???

many thanks

What model of camera and what output does it have?
You should have an ilink or firewire (same thing) connector on the camera, and most modern PCs will have a firewire socket on board, usually mounted near or next to the USB sockets.

Hi, one easy way for you to copy your dv tapes on to a dvd, is using a dvd recorder, and one with a hard drive would be better as you can edit the recording before burning. Most camcorders and dvd recorders have a dv link socket (firewire 1394). That's how I do it, hope this helps.

The camera is a sony HCR-19E, and the socket points on it are - USB, DV out, A/V out and LANC

We just used the usb into the front of our DELL desktop (about 12m old). It doesn't have any smaller sockets on it such as ILINK ports.

Our first attempt burnt the DVD but in data format not movie format.

Hope this clarifies things a bit. Thanks for your help so far.

Have a look at the back of the PC, the firewire socket is very similar to a usb, slightly fatter and only arched shape on one side.
If you dont have one then you will have to buy a firewire card, they usually come complete with cable, and install it. They are not expensive.
